“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” –– John Quincy Adams
Leadership is a skill that can be learned, Often, however, people are thrust into managerial positions because they are great at what they do and may find themselves in leadership roles without the necessary skillset. Or they are promoted or hired into positions of greater scope and complexity that require a different way of thinking, acting, and communicating. Leadership development can help individuals build awareness of their strengths and development areas and help them build the skills they need to be successful leaders.
"What got you here won't get you there." –– Marshall Goldsmith
Coaching is a development approach that builds one’s leadership skills through building awareness, challenging one’s assumptions, and practicing new behaviors. Whether you are just starting out, are climbing the corporate ladder, or are a leader in your home or community, everyone benefits from developing leadership qualities. Typical areas of focus: presence, building teams, interpersonal skills, delegation, managing difficult conversations, dealing with stress, work-life balance, transition to managerial roles, etc. Individual coaching involves a series of confidential, one-on-one discussions with clear goals aimed at modifying behaviors. Unlike training alone, coaching builds in “practice” in order to reinforce the new, more effective behaviors so they can be sustained. Engagements typically begin with feedback from key stakeholders or other assessments (e.g., Hogan, 360, MBTI) to help the individual gain a heightened awareness of what behaviors to start, stop, and continue.
"Great teams do not hold back with one another. They are unafraid to air their dirty laundry. They admit their mistakes, their weaknesses, and their concerns without fear of reprisal.” –– Patrick Lencioni
A high performing team requires both good leadership and good teamwork. The simple act of pulling together a group of strong performers doesn’t necessarily result in effective teamwork. Team development involves working with leaders and teams to help them operate more effectively through clearly defining roles, establishing norms, and attending to interpersonal relationships. For the leader, it is possible to learn techniques to build trust and establish credibility. For the team, just learning about individual styles can have a huge impact on team effectiveness, enabling everyone to communicate better and to demonstrate respect for diverse opinions.
“In addition to the external barriers erected by society, women are hindered by barriers that exist within ourselves. We hold ourselves back in ways both big and small, by lacking self-confidence, by not raising our hands, and by pulling back when we should be leaning in.” –– Sheryl Sandberg
The world needs more women leaders. Women’s development hones in on aspects of leadership that offer particular challenges for women of all ages (e.g., confidence, presence, influence, negotiation). Through coaching, we hone in on those things that tend to hold women back, providing you with new ways to think about these issues and an opportunity to incorporate practical skills into your leadership toolkit.
